WHO IS MAGWENO?
Magweno is that strange feeling you get when you see something utterly adorable but at the same time extravagantly odd. Magweno tempts the creatures out of your head with treats and sweet words.
I have been making creatures for five years now, either on commission, spin-offs from commissions or entirely unique entities plucked from the depths of my mind.
My work centres around mythology, fantasy and texture: pairing shimmering, glossy smooth crystals with soft, smoke-like fluff; hard resin with squashy plushie bodies; rubbery elastic with dusty feathers. I love these pairings and how tactile my work can be.
They always weigh enough to feel real and have that glint in their eye that they could just come to life...
Bright, saturated colours paired with natural looking animals remind me of flashy show-birds and I love that.
I live and work in the North of Scotland, where I have a small agricultural unit known as a "croft". I keep rare breed sheep, cows and poultry and we live an almost self-sufficient lifestyle. My partner Rob is a trained chef but works making ecological carbon zero houses for a local company.
We built our own house in 2014 and have been living in it since!
My dreams and aspirations are to have a line of adorable creatures suitable for every pocket so everyone can have a Magweno creation in their house, and to earn enough to live on!
